Sermon Notes

Supplemental Scripture Reading

Around the Table

These questions seek to create discussion around the theme of this week's passage as a family, one-on-one, or in a small group, for all ages.

1 Corinthians 1:10-17

In this week's passage, we see Paul appeal for unity in the church.

What are some of the ways that we, as believers, can make church about ourselves? How can this create discord within the church?

How can we as a church be unified? How is unity possible if we are so different—different backgrounds, cultures, gifts, etc.?

Read Ephesians 4:1-16

Does unity mean that all believers must always agree and think the same way? What things must we be unified on, and what things is it okay to disagree?

What does it look like to hold somebody accountable and "speak the truth in love?"

Psalm 55:22. As we start in 1 Corinthians today, this passage from Psalms is a good reminder of the Lord's sustaining grace.

Around the Table

These questions seek to create discussion around the theme of this week's passage as a family, one-on-one, or in a small group, for all ages.

1 Corinthians 1:1-9

In verse 2 of this week's passage, Paul calls believers "sanctified in Christ Jesus."

What do you think is God's role in our spiritual growth, and what do you think is our role?

Read Philippians 2:12-13.

How does God "work in us?" How have you seen God work in your life to change your attitudes and desires?

How does the atmosphere we set in our hearts and minds aid or mitigate the Holy Spirit's influence in our life?

What are some things you can do this week to cultivate God's presence and influence in your life?

Life-on-Life Discipleship

We encourage you to continue to discuss this week's passage, connect, and grow with someone this week. Whether you call somebody with whom you've already been meeting, or you'd like us to help pair you with someone, here is a sample meeting structure. Roundtable Q&A Session #1

In case you missed it - you can find the first "Round"table Q&A Session video at the COVID-19 Adult Ministries page, HERE.

We hope to do this again soon, so if you have a question for the next roundtable, submit them HERE.

Supplemental Scripture Reading

2 Timothy 3:14-17. At the end of Judges, it says the people did right in their "own eyes." This passage in Timothy is a good reminder of the importance of God's word as a place where we should go to keep our eyes fixed on King Jesus.

Judges 21:25

The book of Judges has a dark conclusion with each person in Israel doing right in their "own eyes."

In what attitudes, opinions, perspectives, finances, forgiveness, how you speak to your family, free time, or other area of your life are you doing right in your "own eyes?"

Read the following verses from Proverbs aloud and take note of the words that God uses to describe our "own eyes." Proverbs 12:15, 16:2, 21:2, 26:12, 30:12.

Now read Hebrews 12:1-3 aloud.

In what way is ‘looking to Jesus’ actually a looking away to Jesus?

What are some really practical elements that we can integrate into our lives (daily and weekly) that keep our eyes focused on Jesus? In what way this year would you like to fix your eyes more firmly on Jesus?

Submit a Question for the Pastors

We realize that we are living in unprecedented times, and we know that there is a lot on your hearts and minds. Our pastors would love to come alongside you and take a look at some of the questions that you might be having during this time. You may have a question about faith or God's character as it pertains to COVID-19 (i.e. Why does God allow illness like COVID-19 happen if he is good?), or maybe you have other questions more broadly pertaining to Christianity and the Christian life.

Whatever the question, submit it HERE, and we will try and answer a sampling of questions as we continue to post videos during this time.

Supplemental Scripture Reading

1 John 2:15-17. We see in Judges 16 Samson blinded by desires of the flesh. This passage is a reminder that these worldly desires are fleeting and that a love of God and a love of the world cannot coexist.

Judges 16

As we pick back up this week in Judges 16, we see that Samson has continued on a downward spiral of impulsiveness and vindication. Through continued disobedience and irrational choices Samson finally reaches a point of humiliation and weakness, and calls out to God for help defeating Israel's enemies.

What are some circumstances God can use (or has used) to get our attention and draw us back to Him?

What strengths in your life might lead you to put your trust in yourself rather than in God? How can we maintain a strong sense of dependence on God?

Read Romans 12:3-9.

Paul tells us not to think too highly of ourselves, but to think with sober judgement. How would you describe a healthy identity in Christ?

How can you acknowledge the gifts God has given you, without having those gifts become a source of pride?

How can you use one of your God-given gifts to serve someone else this week?

Friday, April 10: Good Friday

A Panel Discussion on Mark 15

Saturday Prayer & Fasting

We want to invite those in our Linworth family that are able and interested, to join us tomorrow for a day of fasting and prayer. There is no pressure for you to participate. We recognize that for a number of different reasons, you may be unable to participate. Isaiah 57 reminds us that fasting is not meritorious in any way, and is only helpful if it leads to deeper focus on God and obedience to Him, especially as it relates to serving others around us in need.

Matthew 9 reminds us that fasting is a discipline that teaches us to long for the coming of Christ.  The physical hunger we experience serves as a reminder to ask God to give us a deeper hunger for Him and His soon return.

If you are able....

The encouragement would be to drink only water throughout the day and focus our time on prayer. This may be a big step for you, so feel free to participate at whatever level you choose.

In the morning, spend some time reading Psalm 139 and thanking God for His intimate knowledge of you and ask God to deepen your knowledge of Him.

At Noon, spend some time reading Revelation 2:1-7 and ask God to use this time to bring about revival throughout the globe.

In the evening, spend some time reading Acts 1:1-5 and ask God use this time to bring many people to become His followers.

Music

Our annual Good Friday service typically has a musical component that seeks to facilitate a time of reflection. The Hardjono family had been preparing some special music for this service. But since we cannot be together to listen, they have recorded several songs for you to enjoy where you are today as we reflect on the crucifixion and wait with anticipation for Sunday. We are so grateful to the Hardjonos for all of their work and effort on these, and hope you enjoy.

Psalm 34

Supplemental Scripture Reading

Matthew 6:25-34Psalm 34:4 says that David "sought" the Lord. Read this passage in Matthew and consider the many blessings Jesus promises his followers who seek him above all things.

Music

We are grateful that Michael was able to come in to record a few songs for us to sing along to this morning. We hope that you enjoyed some time worshipping "alongside" a familiar face during the sermon video this week.

Reflecting on the Final Days of Jesus

This week, we are providing daily Scripture readings along with a daily summary of what took place during each of Jesus' final days before his crucifixion. We hope this resource helps to set the tone for both the weight of Good Friday, and ultimately the joy of Easter! This daily resource starts today and is available in the center block on the bottom half of our main page, or by clicking HERE.

Psalm 34
In verse 4 of this week's Psalm, David said he sought the Lord, and he was answered and delivered from his fears.

Who or what are you personally most tempted to seek, other than God, when you experience tough times? During the past several weeks of this trial, where do you find you seek security or comfort from your fears, anxieties, or boredom?

Read aloud 1 Peter 5:6-11.

What does it mean to be sober-minded and watchful as a Christian? What are some specific ways we can seek the Lord in moments when we are tempted to seek other things?

In verse 9, Peter reminds his readers about the suffering of Christians throughout the world - how can this reminder be a source of strength to us as we struggle during this current trial?

Describe a time where you gave in to temptation that led to suffering and eventually to restoration, confirmation, strengthening, and establishment? What does it mean to be able to rely on God in those difficult times?

Psalm 27

Supplemental Scripture Reading

2 Corinthians 5:1-10Like Psalm 27, this passage compares our life on earth where we must walk by faith, not by sight, to the glorious day when we will see our Lord and Savior in the Heavenly Dwelling he has prepared for us.

Music

Psalm 59:16 says, I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. While nothing can replace coming together as one body, we encourage you to sing where you are.

If you have access to a guitar or piano and are able, we encourage you to use the sheet music to "sing aloud of His love" to some of these song this morning.

If you don't have access to an instrument, or ability to play one, there are lyric video links for each song that you can watch and sing along to, or listen to as a time of reflection this morning.

Psalm 27
David spends much of Psalm 27 speaking to fear, and he ends the psalm with an exhortation to wait for the Lord.

It seems like the whole world is in a unique time of both fear and waiting right now.

Describe another time of waiting you have experienced in your life. What was or has been the most difficult part of that experience? What was or has been the most rewarding?

How should the waiting of those who are believers look different than those who don't know the Lord?

Read the words that Paul writes from prison in Colossians 4:2-6 aloud.

Is waiting on the Lord a passive state, or an active one? What three things did Paul encourage the Colossians to do in this passage?

What is one practical way you can actively seek to wait on the Lord this week? What is one way you can encourage someone else in their waiting?

Psalm 16

Supplemental Scripture Reading

John 10:1-18Consider how, much like Psalm 16, Jesus affirms us in his Word that he will not let go of his followers.

Music

Psalm 59:16 says, I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. While nothing can replace coming together as one body, and praising God with one voice, we are grateful for our Music & Worship Director, Michael Clutz who has provided a few ways for us to sing wherever we are this morning.

If you have access to a guitar or piano and are able, we encourage you to use the sheet music to "sing aloud of His love" this morning.

Around the Table

These questions seek to create discussion around the theme of this week's passage as a family, one-on-one, or in a small group, for all ages.

Psalm 16
In verse 2 of this Psalm, David says that apart from God, he has no good thing.

What would you say is typically your favorite part of a normal week? What are some of the things or experiences in life that you enjoy the most?

Is it okay to enjoy things other than God (family, friends, possessions, etc,)? When do they become idols?

Read James 1:2-3 aloud.

When faced with hardships, trials, and the loss of the things we enjoy, we can be tempted to seek a quick resolution instead of a reason for joy. Whether it is this time of isolation, or another hardship in your life, how have you seen God's inheritance through these circumstances?

What does it look like this week to "count it all joy?"
